The Challenge

The University of Michigan, located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is a prominent public research institution. The CAEN Lab in the Bob and Betty Beyster Building is a cutting-edge study space designed to minimize distractions and promote concentration, with a focus on accommodating neurodiversity. This initiative transformed an outdated computer lab into an environment conducive to enhancing students' academic performance.

We worked with the Director of IT Facilities and Operations at CAEN, and the project aimed to create supportive environments for individuals with invisible disabilities. By modernizing the visible CAEN walk-in computing lab, the objective was to significantly enhance the space for students. The ultimate goal was to develop a learning environment that fosters accessibility and inclusivity for all students, including those with neurodivergent conditions.

Through research on various conditions like autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, dyslexia, and anxiety disorder, the room was tailored to meet the needs of students sensitive to stimuli. This lab serves as a pilot project, with the University hoping its success will inspire similar designs in future renovations of student, staff, and faculty spaces.
