Shop Small: Local Gift Buying Guide II

We loved this post so much in 2017 we are updating with even more local small businesses we love! Remember to shop locally this Small Business Saturday and throughout this holiday season. Looking for the perfect holiday gift?  What better place than local to find special and unique gifts your friends and family will love. In addition to the fact that 59% more money stays right in your community, shopping small has community benefits as well:

Better customer service.

Much like at ISCG; smaller, intimate teams are much more likely to provide exceptional customer service than larger teams. When you work with ISCG your project will have a dedicated team of Workplace Consultant, Interior Designer, Client Service Representative and project manager who sees your project through to the end. It’s never handed off to another team creating the opportunity for loss of momentum or miscommunication of goals.

Give Back More.

Small businesses do more than just write a check to a national charity. They are more likely to get involved with local organizations, like our Chairs for Chair-ity initiative. Our chairs go towards locally based charities who are doing the most good to those within our community.

More Diverse and Unique Product Offerings

You’re more likely to find unique, one-of-a-kind gifts at a small business that are not only made in the USA but made by local artists and makers. While you’re less likely to find mass produced products that doesn’t mean you cannot get them! Often small businesses have access to the same projects that are carried at big box store just a matter of asking for a special order.

FOR THE INNER ARTIST

Poesy Gallery

The Poesy gallery is located in Royal Oak on Woodward between 13 and 14 Mile Road. Open since 2012, Poesy functions more of a mini art fair than gift shop, providing local art aficionados the opportunity to purchase gifts, functional art, photography and fine art from vendors both locally and across the country. They are even running some specials on Small Business Saturday:

  • Spend $35, get a free goodie bag

  • With every receipt you can text to win up to $7,000 in cash and prizes

  • Free gift wrapping

  • Free parking

These ornaments would make the purrfect addition to your tree!

 Yellow Door Art Market

Self-described as ‘hip, handmade goods’ and we couldn’t agree more. Located in downtown Berkley, this quaint show showcases over 60 different local artists. They have everything from jewelry, to home goods, to art and everything in between. S if you needed another excuse to visit, this Saturday Yellow Door is giving away coupons and Michigan chocolates with every purchase!

FOR THE NATURALIST

Moon River Soap Company

Located in Rochester. All you need to do is walk in the door to experience the calming effects of the natural botanicals. All products are made in house with non-GMO and organic ingredients.  They have a variety of different soap combinations to help different skin types.  A favorite for gifts is their all natural baby line including soaps, oils, lotions and balms all specifically made for the tiniest on your gift list this year.

Dirty Girl Farm

Located in Royal Oak. Do not let the name fool you; there is nothing dirty about this place.  They carry all-natural face and body products all made in Michigan. Our dry winter is not doing anyone any favors, so we love the Rose Balm. Perfect for dry, chapped cheeks from frolicking in the snow or visiting the Detroit Zoo’s Wild Lights. Their ‘Be Merry’ Hand Wash and Lotion make a great gift for the hard to please hostess.

FOR THE INNER FOODIE

Monger’s Provisions Cheese + Charcuterie

Earn ‘Hostess with the Mostess’ title after visiting Mongers in Ferndale for an out of this world charcuterie board. Elegantly presented on handcrafted wood boards, these are not your momma’s appetizer. They would make a perfect addition to any celebration - holiday or otherwise! In addition to small groups you can have Monger’s cater your next special event for a truly out of this world experience.

Mrs Mason’s Co. Peanut Brittle

Tis the season for sweets all around, and Mrs. Masons is providing the perfect holiday indulgent treat. The sweet geniuses over at Mrs. Mason’s are hand crafting eight different varieties of brittle using cane sugar (no corn syrup here!) and includes flavors like apple crisp and chocolate covered cherry. Going to get your bake on this weekend? You can buy brittle crumbles to put in your favorite holiday cookie recipe to make them the ultimate treat!
