Employee Spotlight: Joel Miller

Joel is known around the office for many things, most notably his protein bar lunches, excellent dental hygiene, phobia of germs, and having an audio/visual-working touch. His knowledge, experience and “magical” ability of getting the job done, has given him a reputation of being a Magician. His sleight of hand magically blends together designer specifications and client desires into a functional, productive workspace.I sat down with Joel to find out what other secrets he has up his sleeve.

Secret #1: Master Craftsman

Joel is very reserved when it comes to touting his skills, but we can occasionally get him to spill the beans about a project he has in the works. He has taken up woodworking as a hobby where he displays an impressive attention to detail. We’ve tried prodding him toward opening up a side business, but the extended-extended-lead times might put him right out of business. Alas, this is strictly a honey-do operation to the dismay of my fellow coworkers.

Secret #2: Piano Protégé

If you have had the pleasure of working with Joel you’re aware of his sense of calm – nothing ever seems to rattle him. His solution to staying so composed is playing his beloved Baby Grand daily to relieve stress and provide inspiration. He credits the music of George Winston as the spark that ignited his interest in the piano. The depth and layers of sound that can be produced from just two hands should be motivation for us all!

Secret #3: Attention to Detail

Working 26 years in the industry and almost 20 years at ISCG, Joel has developed a discerning eye for his clients. He says it comes from fear of having something go wrong, but any way you look at it, he is a methodical worker. He drives the designers mad when he brings a rendering back for any number of minute reasons, including – the real kicker – to “look more realistic”. You will quickly learn mediocre certainly doesn’t cut it around him.

If Joel is not out flexing his magical abilities, you will probably find him spending time with his wife, Melanie, whom he met while working at a roller rink in high school and who is also a follower on our social media platforms (shout out to all our followers!). Otherwise, you may find him snapchatting with his daughter, Autumn, who is currently a Junior at Michigan State University.

To finish off my interrogation, I had Joel answer a few questions. Enjoy this peek inside his brain:
